Three-and-a-half months after raising his arms in victory on the medal stand for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Qingdao, China, world-class sailor Nick Scandone has lost his battle with ALS. He was 42.
Dan Tucker, the husband of Scandone’s sailing partner Maureen McKinnon-Tucker of Marblehead, broke the news via e-mail to supporters at 1 p.m. Friday, which read simply, “Nicholas Salvatore Scandone, Champion, March 3, 1966-January 2, 2009.”
Scandone and McKinnon-Tucker were the first U.S. team ever to win gold. McKinnon-Tucker is also the first female sailor of any nationality to become a Paralympic champion. Wicked Local Marblehead has more.

Apparently the North Shore doesn’t have an exclusive on people nutty enough to brave freezing ocean waters on a cold (cold!) New Year’s Day. As the Patriot Ledger reports, the South Shore has its share as well. They even have video to prove it:

The annual Polar Bear Plunge went on as scheduled in Swampscott, despite the 12-degree temperatures at 11 a.m. this morning when it took place. But it’s not as bad as it sounds: The water was a balmy 27 degrees.
Wicked Local Swampscott has the lowdown along with a bunch of pictures of 75-100 very chilly people.

Wicked Local Danvers is following the story of a serious crash on Route 1 this morning, before the snow started. Initial reports listed it as a fatality, but state police have not confirmed that, saying only that injuries to Mark J. Haubner, 26, of Wilmington, were “very serious.”
Police tried to get Med-Flight, Danvers Police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said. However, because the injuries were so serious, they could not wait and an ambulance took the victim away.

A night on the town is always a fun prospect on New Year’s Eve — but maybe not this New Year’s Eve. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is advising everyone to take extreme caution with travel today and this evening. Combine that with the extra imbibing that sometimes happens on this occasion, and a quiet evening at home doesn’t seem so bad.

Over the last 40 years, countless North Shore residents have brought their homes through Carlson Real Estate of Marblehead. No longer — it’s going out of business, along with four other GMAC real estate offices around the North Shore.
“I think this was precipitated by bad management,” said longtime Marblehead resident Richard Carlson, who started the company in 1968. When he left, Carlson had 51 offices throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and close to 1,500 employees.
“It doesn’t feel good. You spend most of your working life building a company, and in 10 years they virtually destroy it,” he said. “They have no sensitivity toward the people. They ran it corporately, and squeezed and squeezed.”

So you’re sitting in a restaurant, having a drink, when you realize you have no money to pay for it. The manager says not to worry about it. How do you repay such kindness?
Kingston police say Steven Nichols found himself in this situation at the Charlie Horse Restaurant and responded by punching a cook. He also allegedly threw his bike at the manager, fled into a river, and was dragged to police headquarters kicking and screaming. Oh, and police allege that while he was there he freed himself from the booking bench and kicked a fingerprinting machine to the floor. You try to give a guy a free beverage, and look what happens.
Just because, here’s a fun article on alcohol and its link to aggressive behavior.
